Embodiments of Otsuka Philosophy — Giant Tomato / Curved Giant Cedar / Floating Stones
At Otsuka Pharmaceutical's employee training facility — the Capability Development Research Institute and the adjacent "Vega Hall," three symbolic monuments are displayed. These monuments were specially installed to encourage employees attending training and to inspire a sense of self-challenge.
Giant Tomato
The ceiling of "Vega Hall" is covered with thousands of tomatoes, overlooking visitors. Staff removed the soil from tomato plants normally grown in earth and cultivated them hydroponically, fully liberating the root system and maximizing the plant's growth potential. At peak times, over 10,000 fruits grow in a single year. "Free yourself from what you're accustomed to, strive to improve your way of thinking, and there is still great potential for growth" — this is the message conveyed by the tomato plant cultivated by Otsuka Pharmaceutical.
Curved Giant Cedar
At the entrance of "Vega Hall," two giant curved and intertwined cedar trees can be seen. At first glance, they appear unstable, but their perfect balance sweeps away our preconceptions. This contradicts our common assumptions that "cedar trees must be straight" and "two curved trees are fixed at a point where they shouldn't be." This artwork reminds us that creation requires breaking free from fixed ideas and concepts, and that creation is not easily achieved.
Floating Stones
In the pond at the front of the facility, numerous large black stones appear to float "above the fountain," with some stones even hanging down along the pond's edge. This incredible landscape captures the attention of every visitor, enriches our imagination, and teaches us the importance of shifting our thinking beyond conventional wisdom.
